Skaters are assessed based on their ability and age, and placed in an appropriate training group. The skating season starts in the first week of September and continues through mid March.
If you are interested in learning more about our sport or the benefits of the Vernon Speed Skating Club, or would like to try speed skating, please contact us and we can arrange for you to participate in a practice --- or, stop by the arena during one of our practice sessions, we are happy to introduce you to the sport and welcome you to our club. We know you’ll love the fun, friendships and excitement of speed skating.
Please refer to our Schedule for practice times and special dates to remember. Please refer to our Calendar for events and competitions.
Learn To Skate (Level 1)
Learn to Skate is our beginner program. This program is developed for skaters, age three and up, who wish to learn techniques specific to our speed skating platform. The focus is on skill development using fun and challenging agility activities, and the lessons help foster a skating passion for life. We follow the SSC Pin Program and test skaters at the end of the season each year.
Competitive (Level 2)
Our competitive group is based on learning to train and training to train, with a focus on specialized skills and racing techniques. Skaters vary in age, but abilities are similar, creating a good practice environment for developing skills necessary for competition. This group can participate in Regional Competitions throughout the Province. This is also a great level for youth cross training—many skaters in this group are active in multiple sports.
Elite (Level 3)
Elite skaters focus on competitive training, race strategies and race conditioning with a full spectrum of on and off ice programs. Skaters in this group may qualify for Provincial and National Competitions. This program is coached by Mike Hall, a Level 3 NCCP coach, former National Team member, and Olympic Athlete.
Our masters are active skaters for life. The level of participation from this group depends on skating experience and ability. Master skaters (age 18 or older) can join as adults learning to skate or as competitive members. Vernon Speed Skating Club provides a discount for masters as an incentive for them to continue skating for life.
